Office of the Welfare Commissioner, Bhopal Gas Victims was set up in 1989-90 for speedy disposal of the compensation claims filed by the Bhopal gas victims. Under this office, claims, courts have been set up at three distinct levels under the Deputy Commissioners, Additional Welfare Commissioner and Hon’ble Welfare Commissioner. It works under the control of Department of Chemicals and Petrochemicals, Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers, Government of India.
This department has given three different installments of compensations to the gas victims till date i.e. Original compensation of Rs. 740 crores sanctioned by Union Carbide, Prorata compensation in the same proportion and Ex-Gratia compensation depending on the different categories awarded to the gas victims by Hon’ble judicial officers. Disburtioned to beneficiary bank account of the gas victims, which has been sanctioned by Govt. of India.
As on date, Hon'ble Judicial Officers serving this department are Hon'ble Justice Anil Verma as Hon'ble Welfare Commissioner, Hon’ble Mrs. Renuka Kanchan as Registrar, Hon’ble Ms. Pratibha Satawne as Additional Welfare Commissioner and Honb'le Shri Priyank Dubey as Deputy Welfare Commissioner respectively.
